![]() ![]() Without that veneer of seriousness, the show’s real identity as a genre piece about an in-too-deep maverick cop is revealed: the conveniently placed clues and particularly the cast’s reliance on pained looks and sly side-eyes becomes hilariously noticeable. Brannick soon wangles it so that he is visiting the house alone to look for more information that old Nesbitt twinkle, previously obscured by Brannick’s haunted cragginess, briefly flickers.īut although Bloodlands 2 might have a dual story, with the hunt for Colin’s killer layered below the question of whether Brannick can recover his loot undetected, it no longer has the added heft and relevance that the Goliath plotline provided, tapping as it did into the post-Brexit fear that Northern Ireland’s smothered resentments might spring violently back to life. As played by Victoria Smurfit, the icy blond Olivia is everything one expects from a generic crime-drama widow: floating immaculately around a windswept, glass-fronted mansion, she is too cool, too inscrutable and, as the script heavily flags in case we weren’t seeing it, too sexual to be straightforwardly grieving. ![]() Brannick and his increasingly suspicious sidekick, DS Niamh McGovern (Charlene McKenna), drive off to break the news to the dead guy’s wife. The body is Colin, an accountant who was the custodian of Brannick’s bullion. Some more top-level eye acting from Nesbitt – Brannick’s alarm is hidden from the other police officers by his full CSI PPE, complete with face mask – underlines it. Here in 2022, there has been a murder and, if the excessively doomy music didn’t give it away, our experience of season one tells us one thing for certain: whoever this freshly bulleted carcass is, Brannick is going to know more about them than he lets on. Roll the opening titles – then immediately it’s crime-scene time. We knew Brannick had been press-ganged into carrying out a hit on gun-runners but now, upon seeing his younger self do the deed, we learn that the shipment of arms he intercepted also contained gold bars. We flash back to that pivotal day in 1998, where the Brannick of 24 years ago is conjured up via a combination of some intense balaclava work from Nesbitt, and then some of that exciting youthifying CGI they have nowadays, artificially reviving a wrinkle-free Jimmy N circa Cold Feet. The new run does what it must, which is to give Brannick a new secret. “Is he dirty?” has been replaced by “Will he be found out?”, a less compelling unknown. Brannick’s colleagues may not know he’s bent, but we do. Reasonably satisfying as the answer was to the question of whether Brannick was a killer, the fact that it has been dealt with does rather jam a stick in the spokes of season two. ![]() A couple of eventful instalments later, and – dizzied by twists, overcome by the whiff of red herrings – we were somehow excited to be told that Brannick was Goliath after all. Then an episode-two shocker saw Brannick suddenly shoot a supporting character in the face for knowing too much, at which point we assumed him being Goliath was so obvious it couldn’t be true. Ah, said everyone who’s seen a crime drama before: it’s him. DCI Tom Brannick (Nesbitt) investigated a kidnapping, the details of which mirrored a politically explosive old mystery from 1998, when the wounds of the Troubles were raw: a criminal mastermind known as Goliath had caused four people with links to the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) or IRA to disappear, including Brannick’s wife. And, while critics readied their cliches about the setting almost constituting a separate character in the drama, there was a further sweetener: Jed “Line of Duty” Mercurio’s production company had made it, suggesting fiendish plotting to get lost in.Ī hit duly followed, nicely dark and paranoid in tone, with a narrative that pulled off the classic whodunnit trick of making us forget the most likely answer to the riddle. ![]() The show’s location, Northern Ireland, promised to offer not just chilly landscapes but a deeper dramatic purpose, steeped in the region’s recent history. James Nesbitt has long since been part of that top echelon of TV actors whose casting is a selling point on its own. If all crime dramas need a distinguishing gimmick to draw punters in, Bloodlands (BBC One) – which is back for a second series – arrived last year with three. ![]()

All are contained in the small room you are in and each has its own solution that’s pretty obvious, if a little contrived (for one, you need to actively electrocute yourself in order to zap a moth on the ceiling light). An early example has you feeding 3 bugs to a giant spider, who’s blocking your exit. The puzzles rarely amount to more than moving around the room you are in and finding the few prompts, then simply figuring out the correct order to use them. The story seems to revolve around some spooky shenanigans, with Bulb boys family being kidnapped by some otherworldly creatures just because and it’s your job to rescue them via some point and click puzzles and light platforming. There is no text, or speech and just a few thought bubbles to give some indication of what is going on. Follow its advice and you’re in for a couple of hours of strange beasts, point and click style puzzles and next to zero explanation of what is happening along the way. Upon starting Bulb boy, you are presented with nothing more than an animation of a finger pressing a non-descript button. With an art style that’s like Adventure Time mated with World of Goo seen through Sam Fishers tri-night-vision goggles, this kickstarted game comes out of left field to a slightly underwhelming response. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I like using this product as it gives a natural look to my brows. From their seats, guests can watch the cooks working the grills. The smell of wood smoke lures guests from the parking lot, and when they walk in the front door they have a clear line of sight to the open hearth blazing in the middle of the dining room. Much of the restaurant’s menu of locally sourced ingredients is cooked on a battery of three wood-fueled grills set in a 24-foot hearth. Named after characters in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, King + Duke is one of chef Ford Fry’s seven Atlanta-area restaurant concepts. “It speaks to something nostalgic in its flavor profile and harkens back to your first barbecue with the family when you smell all the charcoal-y smoke in the air.” Photo by Andrew Thomas Lee“The flavor you get from cooking over live fire is unparalleled,” says EJ Hodgkinson, executive chef at King + Duke in Atlanta, Ga. The focal point of King + Duke’s interior is the hearth where a large center grill sits below a smoker box. And they’re not only central to the menu but are the focus of these operations’ brand essence and design aesthetic. These are not backyard hibachis but rather top-quality commercial equipment designed for the rigors of hard restaurant use. And a growing cadre of chef-driven restaurants takes the hot concept a step further, using wood-fired grills and hearths to prepare nearly their entire menus. The demand for authentic Neapolitan-style pizza has fueled installation of wood-fired brick ovens in trattorias and other casual concepts around the U.S. Today, the scent and savor of wood-grilled foods continue to exert a primeval appeal, and a growing number of restaurants now make live-fire hearths the heart of their concepts. ![]() Ancient architects laid the hearthstone first, then built the home or inn around the fireplace, the central nexus for heating and cooking. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Students who are 98 th percentile or above after the individual assessment, can participate in the DDSB gifted program. The penalty in that case might be beating rather than hanging.” A lesser writer might stop to wring her hands about child abuse. She is very much of our time and yet she invariably avoids the pitfalls of anachronism when discussing the values and thinking of the ancients. She wants us to engage with the Romans: “Since the Renaissance at least, many of our most fundamental assumptions about power, citizenship, responsibility, political violence, empire, luxury and beauty have been formed, and tested, in dialogue with the Romans and their writing.” Beard is of our time and yet invariably avoids anachronism when discussing the values of the ancientsĪnd it is in the deconstruction of these ideals that she is at her most vital. Mary Beard doesn’t want you to learn how to live from the Romans, or anything as trite as that. He was the first to pull off the stunt of bringing elephants to Italy and on one occasion was supposed to have tried, unsuccessfully, to disconcert a visiting Roman by revealing one of his beasts from behind a curtain.” It’s hard to imagine the elephant could have come as a complete surprise, unless it was an astonishingly thick curtain, but the image of Pyrrhus as a sort of proto-Barnum is delightful.īut the breezy tone belies the serious academic weight behind her narrative. She has also filled her pages with the kind of stories that lure students to study classics in the first place. Were the soldiers actually dismantling a temporary camp and not on a shell hunt?” And as for Caligula’s famous military debacle, when he ordered his soldiers to gather seashells as though they were the spoils of a victorious battle over the ocean? “The one about the seashells may well go back to a confusion about the Latin word musculi, which can mean both ‘shells’ and ‘military huts’. The likelihood of Hannibal cracking open the chunks of Alpine rock blocking his way is dismissed in a heartbeat (“probably not”). Cleopatra’s final moments are on the receiving end of some trademark scepticism: “Suicide by snakebite is a hard feat to pull off, and anyway the most reliably deadly snakes would be far too hefty to conceal in even a regal fruit basket.” Too few academics have a working knowledge of both the size of a royal fruit pile and the relative bulk of a snake. She is never less than a vastly engaging tour guide around some of the best-known parts of the Roman story, debunking its myths with ease. It should be noted that some emperors, such as Pertinax, tried to reverse the debasement.Nonetheless, she embarks on the colossal task of telling as much of the story of Rome and its provinces as she can fit into 544 pages.
